Strategic Water Supply Infrastructure Design for Residential Development – Kokalyane, Sofia

This project involved the strategic design of water supply infrastructure for newly planned residential development plots in the Kitkata area of Kokalyane, within Sofia Municipality.

Building upon previously approved infrastructure studies, the project evaluated their applicability to the new development and assessed the capacity of the existing water distribution system. Existing pipelines, projected water demand, and the available capacity of the primary transmission main supplying the service area were analysed to ensure reliable long-term network performance.

Due to the site’s significant elevation differences, the water supply system was designed using pressure zoning supported by pressure reducing valves. New Ø110 mm and Ø63 mm PEHD distribution mains were designed and connected to the existing Ø140 mm transmission main, with pipe diameters determined through hydraulic calculations and projected future demand.

The study extended beyond the immediate development by updating projected water demand for several neighbouring growth areas, ensuring that the primary distribution network remains adequately sized for future urban expansion.

Hydraulic verification confirmed that the proposed system maintains the required operating pressures under both peak demand and simultaneous fire-flow conditions, demonstrating the reliability and resilience of the proposed infrastructure.

The final design delivers a comprehensive water supply strategy that integrates future urban development, hydraulic performance, and long-term network capacity planning. The project provides sustainable utility infrastructure for the new residential development while supporting the planned growth of the wider Kokalyane area.
